British Bandsman - Brass Roots - 17th July 2010 'Hilgay Silver Band, based in a small village in rural West Norfolk was founded in 1896. In recent years it has twice reached the fourth section National Final and it gives regular concerts throughout Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. In the spring of this year it was delighted to welcome Daryle Taylor as Musical Director. Daryle's musical background is wide and distinguished, being both an accomplished pianist and trombonist as well as a conductor and tutor. He was principal trombonist of the Household Cavalry Band, and one of many highlights of his career as a pianist has been playing for her majesty the Queen during investiture ceremonies. Players joining the band recently include husband and wife, David (Eb bass) and Louise (euphonium) Kittle, Corrine Pinnard (euphonium), Mike Bennett (cornet), Robbie Germeno (trombone) and 'Mark Jackson (percussion)'. For many years a training band, mostly but not exclusively, for youngsters, has been run by Brian Doy. Recently, Brian has extended his voluntary tuition work into local primary schools. So far, three village schools, at Hilgay, Denver and Ten Mile Bank have been visited on a regular basis, an the band sees Brian's work as a two way-project, giving local children a general interest in music and injecting occasional new blood into the main band. Hilgay Silver Band welcomes new members of all ages and ability and can be contacted through www.hilgaysilverband.co.uk' |
